YouTube Duo Plan: Premium Sharing Update

by drbyos

YouTube is taking an innovative turn to its subscriptions with the testing in the test phase of a premium plan designed for two people, similar to the successful spotify duo. This new model will allow users to share the benefits of YouTube Premium, such as reproduction without ads, access to YouTube Music and the possibility of downloading videos, with another person from their home at a more accessible cost than the family plan.

The plan, which is already being tested in countries such as India, France, Hong Kong and Taiwan, is aimed at users over 13 who have a Google account and are part of the same family group on Google Family Link. Each subscriber will maintain an independent account, which guarantees that recommendations, reproduction lists and visualization preferences remain personalized, without interfering with each other. “We seek to offer greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers with this option for two people at a small price,” said a YouTube spokesman.

In India, the plan has an initial price of 219 rupees (approximately 2.29 euros), standing between the individual plan (149 rupees) and the family (299 rupees). Although prices will vary according to the market, this structure suggests that in countries such as Spain, Mexico and the rest of Latin America, the cost of the duo plan will be competitive, offering an attractive alternative for couples, floormates or small families that do not require a plan for up to five people.

This launch comes after the introduction of YouTube Premium Lite, an economic version with limited functions, and reflects the efforts of the platform to diversify its subscription options and capture users who are looking for alternatives to the individual or family plan. Although there is still no confirmed date for its arrival in more countries, the test phase indicates that YouTube is evaluating the user’s response for a possible global deployment.

With this movement, YouTube not only competes with platforms such as Spotify, but also reinforces its strategy to make Premium more accessible, especially in a context where advertising and advertisements have generated tensions with users.
