The supporters of the patriarch of the left, 73, including several leaders of the labour party (PT), paraded between cries of "Lula libre" and slogans against current president, Jair Bolsonaro.
Determined to prove his innocence to what he regards as a "judicial farce," Lula said in an article published yesterday in the newspaper Folha, from Sao Paulo, that his prison sentence tries to prevent him from reorganizing the opposition in the country, when his party lacks leadership and is being discredited by corruption.
"I was improperly imprisoned, accused and convicted for a crime that never existed for a year … I keep faith in a fair trial. I can sleep with a clear conscience of my innocence. I am a political prisoner", Lula expressed in the text.
