A married mother of two children was arrested and charged with rape in the first grade this week after reports of the alleged sexual assault of a teenage student at the school emerged.
It is alleged that Joyce Churchwell, 40, invited the 18-year-old male student to his home last year after conversing with him for the first time on Snapchat.
According to police, Snapchat conversations intensified and Mrs. Churchwell sent nude photos of herself to the student.
At the end of last year, while Mrs. Churchwell’s husband was absent, she invited the student to her home to have sex with her and another teacher at Berryhill High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
It is reported that rumors about the abuse circulated around the school in December and the student finally told the police what happened with the two women.
The other woman who was allegedly involved in the trio has not been charged since she left school.
While the age of consent in Oklahoma is 16, adults can still be charged with sexual assault if they were in a position of authority over their victim.
In this case, Churchwell was the child’s volleyball coach. Since then he has been on a leave of absence from his job.
A social media account that seems to belong to the teacher refers to her Bible studies and volleyball training.
Berryhill High School is fully cooperating with the investigation of the alleged crimes of Mrs. Churchwell.
“The Berryhill School District takes the safety of its students very seriously and does everything possible to provide a safe learning environment,” a spokesman said.
