India’s Hopes High at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo

A strong contingent of athletes represents India at the global competition.


The World athletics Championships 2025 are underway in Tokyo,Japan,from september 13th to 21st. This 20th edition of the championships, also known as Tokyo25, features intense competition across various athletic disciplines.

India has sent a team of 19 athletes to the World Athletics Championships. The squad comprises 14 men adn five women, participating in 15 different events – 11 for men and four for women.

Neeraj Chopra, the reigning world javelin champion, leads the Indian team. Other prominent athletes include long jumper Murali Sreeshankar,women’s javelin record holder Annu Rani,and Animesh Kujur,the first Indian sprinter to compete at this level.

Praveen Chithravel (triple jump), Parul chaudhary (3000m steeplechase), and Abdulla Aboobacker are also key members of the squad. Gulveer Singh and Pooja are set to compete in two events each.

India’s campaign began with the 35km race walk events. Priyanka Goswami finished 24th in the women’s event, while Sandeep Kumar secured 23rd place in the men’s event. Unluckily, Ram Baboo faced disqualification.

Historically, Indian athletes have secured three medals at the world championships: Anju Bobby George’s long jump bronze in Paris 2003, Neeraj Chopra’s javelin silver in Oregon 2022, and his gold in Budapest 2023.

More than 2000 athletes from over 200 countries are participating in the World Athletics Championships 2025, competing for 147 medals across 49 events.
