The Year 2025: What’s in and What’s Out
It’s incredible how quickly time passes; it’s now 2025, just a blink after what felt like yesterday was 2019. As we step into a new year, certain traditions and trends deserve a warm welcome, while others might be better left behind.
What’s In for 2025
Tacky Christmas
Forget the minimalist, neutral tones of Christmas decorations businesses promote. Keep it festive and fun, resembling the joyful Christmases of your childhood. Embrace multicolored foiled cutouts, lights, and tinsel. Let’s bring back those electronic Santas that dance to classic tunes like Elvis Presley. It’s time to reject the pressure of creating a “tasteful” and instead enjoy the magic of a bright, decorations-filled home.
Unashamedly Being a Tourist
There’s nothing wrong with being an enthusiast of travel. Don’t buy into the hype around being a “traveller” instead of a “tourist.” Regardless of your motivation for visiting a new place, you’re a tourist. Enjoy every moment, from the novelty ashtrays to the aromatic markets. Terrorism aside, why worry about authenticity? It’s all about the experience, whether it’s a colour-splashing cocktail in Spain or laughing at unsuspecting office workers on a tourist tour bus.
Wearing Old Clothes to Work Out
Exercise is about mental health and physical fitness, not necessarily fashion. You don’t need high-end Lycra or aerodynamic compression gear for a post-meeting run. Keep it humble with old high school shorts and comfortable, durable tops. These workouts are about you, not others. Your workout routine should make you feel good, not just good-looking.

What’s Out for 2025
Social Media-Hyped Food
The era of standing in lines for social media glory is over. There’s no such thing as a food item “that good” to warrant hours of standing around. We’ve moved beyond the need for forced, eye-catching photos. Instead of blocking footpaths for an overwhelmingly photogenic slice of pizza, simply enjoy the food without the need for excessive documentation.
‘Coffee and a Walk’ Dates
A simple coffee and walk date may work for non-human companions, but it’s time to up the ante for human connections. A great date offers soft lighting, a starter, and perhaps even a conversation in a more intimate setting. Save the ‘coffee and a walk’ for when you’re feeling particularly adventurous with a new puppy, not your romantic partner.
Singing Over the All Blacks Haka
The All Blacks’ haka is a profound cultural expression of defiance and pride, a symbol of survival against colonialism. Your rendition of “Fields of Athenry” cannot compete with and should not distract from this powerful tradition. Leave the enthusiastic shouting at the rugby to be a part of the cultural heritage it is meant to be, and let Ireland shine in other ways.
