Jasmin Mühling, the second chairman of the Werne animal shelter, confirmed the breach, stating, We have been chopped! Mühling was locked out of the organization’s Facebook page for five weeks, during which time unauthorized content was posted by unknown individuals. The shelter typically uses its Facebook profile to share information about its work and solicit donations for animal care.

Mühling emphasized the potential danger of the fraudulent posts,saying,I didn’t even open it myself,but warned all the contacts not to follow the call. This proactive approach likely prevented further harm to the shelter’s supporters.

Immediate Actions and Police Examination

Upon discovering the hack, Mühling alerted the shelter’s followers through her personal Facebook profile and contacted Meta, Facebook’s parent company. A meta employee confirmed the hacking incident. The shelter also filed a formal complaint with the Unna police department, who initiated an investigation on March 23, according to their press office.

Account recovery and Damage Assessment

On March 25,the Werne animal shelter announced the recovery of its Facebook page. A subsequent post stated, We are back on reservation.
