QPlease tell us about the reason for the production of “Symphonic Suite Space Battleship Yamato 2202”.

AAkira MiyagawaDirectly, the biggest reason was that I declared “I will make it” at the concert on October 14, 2019. I’ve always thought that it was so challenging that I had to support myself, so it feels like there are two people, “I was told” and “I was told”.
Going back to the starting point, I was just beginning to study classical music when I first heard my father’s “Symphonic Suite Space Battleship Yamato”. Kayokyoku is a world of 3 minutes per song, and the gekitomo music is 4 minutes at the longest, about 1 and a half minutes. On the other hand, there is a classical symphony of about 40 minutes per song, but when I started studying it, I heard “Symphonic Suite Space Battleship Yamato” and it came to my mind. I wanted to aim for a new symphony work from a modern and cool anime. It also matched the progressive rock concept of listening to one song in total, whether it was Pink Floyd or EL & P at the time. It wasn’t something someone told me that I had to make something like this, but I felt it myself.
Since I became a composer, every time I met a person from Nippon Columbia, I was told that I would like to listen to Akira-san’s version of the Symphonic Suite, but at that time I felt that I couldn’t do it. After that, I will be involved in “Space Battleship Yamato 2199”, but when this work started, I thought that there would be another one, and I felt that I had to continue the series. In that case, I was always conscious of the fact that the story of the symphonic suite would come out in the future.

QHow did you prepare for the production?

AAkira MiyagawaAfter declaring it at the concert, a concrete conversation about the composition began while listening to the original soundtrack VOL.2 of “Space Battleship Yamato 2202 Ai no Senshi” with Bandai Namco Arts. Furthermore, when I heard that the production of “Space Battleship Yamato 2205 New Departure” was decided, I was thinking of recording this symphonic suite in June 2020. However, the schedule has changed due to the corona wreck. It was a time when I finished making music for the musical in 2021 and finished the performance of “Shakespeare in the 12th year of Tenpo”. So I had time to write the song I wanted to write. From there, I started by reviewing all seven chapters of “2202” and spent a full 100 days writing songs while asking myself questions. On the contrary, I think it would have been a completely different work without Corona.

QAre the tasks of making symphonic suites and pops different?

AAkira MiyagawaFor example, a person who has only written an essay is like writing a feature-length novel, so the procedure is completely different. While thinking about the whole thing, we will cherish what comes to mind in the fragments and connect them like a puzzle. In other words, the Symphonic Suite is a “strange connection”. There are various elements in one song, and the connection is important, so it’s more like making a musical or opera, just as a gekitomo and an opera are completely different. The gekitomo music is close to the video, but in the symphonic suite, the music itself speaks for itself.
I listened to “Symphonic Suite Space Battleship Yamato” made by my father again, but there are many challenging challenges. The enka guitar is playing the melody, the “red scarf” is a samba, and some songs are not in the play. I think I was doing it quite freely, but even so, when I listened to the 9th song “ISKANDALL”, it made me feel like “I finally arrived”. The suite is not in the order of the story, and I feel a sense of accomplishment even though it is packed with various musical elements. Moreover, it doesn’t end there. It’s different from the 26th episode of the main story, but it makes me feel the same.
This time as well, it was my challenge that there must be something that can only be done with the Symphonic Suite, and I also have respect for my father. I also wanted to create something different from the work in which the gekitomo music was arranged to form a symphonic suite.

QHow did the recording proceed in the wake of Corona?

AAkira MiyagawaDuring the self-restraint period, I was thinking about “how to reopen the concert hall”. It was decided that the orchestra would be difficult because the stage would be overcrowded, so I had to talk to the inspector who coordinates the studio around the end of June and record them separately. However, if you record them completely separately, it will not sound like “Space Battleship Yamato”. It is hoped that musicians will gather in the work “Space Battleship Yamato” to make sounds all at once. Therefore, even if you go through the line, you can see the movement of the conductor without any time difference, so I prepared two studios to avoid crowding, reduced the usage time of the studio as much as possible, and recorded in small steps. It was. I think it was good for the music industry because we were able to make large-scale recordings after that by making this effort. However, it costs money because it holds two studios. I hope this experience will be a good memory in 10 years.

QPlease tell us about your involvement in “Space Battleship Yamato 2199”.

AAkira MiyagawaWhen Yoshinobu Nishizaki made “Space Battleship Yamato Revival”, the conductor Naoto Otomo contacted me and said, “Let’s do it together.” I liked the first “Space Battleship Yamato” and refused to work on a sequel-like work. That’s why when I heard about “Space Battleship Yamato 2199” and met Yutaka Izubuchi, I first talked about that thought. Then, Mr. Izubuchi said, “What I want to do is a remake of the first 26 episodes,” and said, “If so, I’ll do it.” One of the reasons is that Mr. Izubuchi invited me from a good side street, saying, “Let’s make a school song for a training school and a national anthem for the Gamirasu Empire.” I also thought that if I didn’t accept the name of a different composer, I wouldn’t be convinced. By doing so, there are places where the way of thinking has gradually changed.
