Vocational training: More political education required – Regensburger Nachrichten

In view of the current, dramatic developments in the Ukraine, Joachim Maiß, chairman of the Federal Association of Teachers for Vocational Training (BvLB), calls for more political education to take place in schools.

Joachim Maiß, Chairman of the Federal Association of Teachers for Vocational Training (BvLB), demands in view of the current, dramatic developments in Ukraine: “Politics lessons must be offered to all pupils across all school types in a reliable and age-appropriate manner.”

Understanding democracy needs democracy mediation

According to Maiß, it is important that specialist teachers are used who, together with their students, classify and evaluate current events from a political perspective. “Understanding democracy requires the communication of democracy. And here there is a growing gap, because at the vocational schools in particular, general subjects are sometimes only taught to a limited extent. The reason for this is the blatant shortage of teachers for years,” adds Joachim Maiß.

Students must not be left alone

Especially the transition from school to work is a time in which young people find themselves new due to their development. In this central phase of life, the individual political characteristics are also formed, from which questions often arise about the complex, interest-driven relationships between business, politics and society. “Therefore, our students must not be left alone, but need the support of strong teachers in finding their own personality and orientation for a social life that is based on values and inspires enthusiasm for democracy,” says Joachim Maiß, emphasizing: “A strong democracy needs young people People empowered to be active members of society.”
