Tournament Organizers Respond
The Viareggio Cup press office released a statement addressing the incident:
Turin-Internacional will not recover. In the first half recovery, the Internacional denounced a discriminatory expression by a Turin player against a player from the eternalacional, the Brazilian Kaua. By reason of that expression that woudl have been pronounced, Kaua reacted and that is an objective fact so much so that the referee expelled him for reaction foul. The Internacional abandoned the field, the coach Joao Miguel gathered all the players, those on the pitch and on the bench, and abandoned the pitch returning to the changing rooms without the intention of returning to the field. Torino players remained on the pitch. When after ten minutes the Internacional is convinced to return to the field, by regulation there are no extremes to resume the game that is suspended and definitively interrupted. The decisions will be made by the sports judge. We did not take a position because we did not hear the pronounced expression. Where there had been, given that the Viareggio tournament condemns not in words but with the facts always every expression of racism, we would have distanced it. The arbitration triad did not hear the expression. the report came from some people in the stands in the area where what was reported would have happened
Viareggio Cup Press Office
The statement confirms that the tournament organizers did not directly witness the alleged racist abuse and that the refereeing team also did not hear any offensive language. Though, they emphasized the tournament’s zero-tolerance policy towards racism and stated that they would have taken action had they been able to verify the allegations.
