From Bundesliga Pioneer to E-Sports Powerhouse: How VfL Wolfsburg Shaped the German Competitive Gaming Landscape

A Vision Realized: Wolfsburg’s Decade-Long E-Sports Journey

Ten years ago, on May 19, 2015, vfl Wolfsburg etched its name in history by becoming the first Bundesliga club to venture into the burgeoning world of e-sports. This bold move, initially met with skepticism, has proven to be a visionary decision, profoundly impacting the development of the competitive gaming scene in Germany. Today, VfL Wolfsburg reflects on a decade of unprecedented success, fueled by a pioneering spirit, a commitment to innovation, and an unwavering passion for e-sports.

Setting the Standard: Pioneering Work and Lasting Influence

Wolfsburg’s early partnership with Meetyourmakers sent a clear signal to the footballing world. While some initially scoffed, other Bundesliga clubs soon followed suit, recognizing the potential of e-sports.The introduction of the “Virtual Bundesliga Club Championship,” an official DFL competition since the 2023/2024 season, solidified e-football’s place as an integral part of the German football landscape. This league has seen viewership numbers increase by 30% year-over-year,demonstrating the growing interest in competitive FIFA gaming.

With my commitment as the first official e-athlete of VfL Wolfsburg, a real milestone was set in both German and global e-sports. together we gave the starting signal for a gold era of FIFA e-sport and actively participated in the development of central competitive structures in the EA FC cosmos. VfL will always have a special place in the heart. E-sports anniversary-hardly to believe how quickly time has passed.
Benedikt Saltzer, former e-athlete of VfL Wolfsburg

Nurturing Talent: The Wolves E-Academy

Recognizing the importance of developing young talent, VfL Wolfsburg launched one of the first youth programs in German e-sports, the Wolves e-academy, in the 2017/2018 season. This academy has produced a string of accomplished players, including Benedikt Bauer, Riad Fazlija, and Julius Kühle, who have become prominent figures in the e-sports scene. Later graduates, such as Khalid Gürel and Lukas Wolff, are now making waves in other Bundesliga clubs, showcasing the academy’s effectiveness in cultivating top-tier talent.

Beyond the Console: Bridging the Gap Between Reality and Virtuality

VfL Wolfsburg’s commitment to e-sports extends beyond the virtual pitch. The club has consistently sought innovative ways to engage with its community, organizing events around the Volkswagen Arena, establishing a dedicated gaming zone in Hall 09, and even collaborating with Epic Games in January 2021 to bring the green-white jersey to the popular game “Fortnite.” These creative initiatives have captivated fans and made digital experiences more tangible.

Content and Competition: A Winning Combination

As the strategic realignment of the 2021 season, VfL Wolfsburg has embraced content creation and entertainment as integral components of its e-sports strategy. The introduction of the “Pipe Crew” and creators like “Maxmalle” and “Faro” has brought fresh ideas, attracted new audiences, and strengthened the VfL Wolfsburg brand. This approach reflects a broader trend in e-sports, where content creation and streaming are increasingly important for building fan engagement and generating revenue.

E-sport has become an integral part of our strategic orientation. We have been investing consistently in this area for ten years-and will continue to do so in the future to further expand our position in digital sport.
Michael Meeske, VfL Managing Director

A Home for E-Sports: the AOK Stadium Gaming Studios

A significant milestone in VfL Wolfsburg’s e-sports journey was the opening of its own gaming studios in the AOK stadium for the 2023/2024 season. This 80-square-meter facility provides a dedicated space for tournaments, streams, and video productions, symbolizing the growing importance of e-sports within the club.

Strong Partnerships: A Foundation for Success

VfL Wolfsburg’s e-sports program has benefited from the support of long-term partners such as Cosmosdirekt and Turtle Beach. Cosmosdirekt, a partner since 2018, is the namesake of the “Wolves E-Academy Powered by Cosmosdirekt.” Turtle Beach has been providing high-quality equipment for competitions and live streams as 2017, ensuring professional conditions for the club’s e-athletes.

We have been accompanying VfL on its chance of success for over seven years. The anniversary is a strong sign of resistance in e-sports-we look forward to the next chapters of this partnership.
