Challenges and new Directions for vegesack’s Winter fun
Following a less-than-stellar “winter fun” season in 2024, Vegesack is actively exploring new strategies to revitalize its annual winter festivities. The Vegesacker Committee for Road, Transport and Market Affairs recently convened to discuss the future of the event, acknowledging the need for significant improvements and a fresh approach.
The Demise of the Ice Skating Hall: A Sign of the Times
A key point of discussion was the feasibility of an ice skating hall, a popular request among residents.Though, Lars Ehlers, senior project manager at Vegesack Marketing, explained that the idea is no longer viable due to a confluence of factors. These include escalating fixed costs, stricter legal requirements for safety and fire protection, and a decline in visitor numbers. These challenges reflect a broader trend in the events industry, where organizers are grappling with rising operational expenses and evolving safety standards.
According to a recent report by the Event Safety Alliance, compliance costs for events have increased by an average of 15% in the past five years, driven by more stringent regulations and insurance requirements.
Learning from 2024: Addressing shortcomings and Seeking Quality
Ehlers candidly admitted that the 2024 winter fun was “not very mega,” citing last-minute cancellations by showmen and the failed attempt to host an ice stock cup in a vacant shop as major setbacks. To avoid a repeat of these issues, Vegesack Marketing proactively reached out to potential vendors to participate in this year’s event. The goal is to create a higher quality of stay
for visitors, a sentiment echoed by many community members.
Currently, three distinct concepts are under consideration, each proposing multiple stalls spread throughout downtown Vegesack, a departure from the previous concentration on the ellipse. This decentralized approach aims to encourage greater foot traffic and engagement with local businesses.
Weighing Risks and Opportunities: A Purposeful Decision-Making Process
The board is carefully evaluating the three proposals, assessing both the potential benefits and risks associated with each. A crucial factor in the decision-making process is financial viability. The chosen concept must be financially sustainable to ensure the long-term success of the winter festivities.

Beyond Tradition: Exploring Alternative Approaches
While some committee members expressed enthusiasm for the existing proposals, others advocated for a more radical reimagining of the event. ingo Schiphorst, a non-party member, deemed the term “winter time” as insufficiently ambitious, while Heiko Werner, also autonomous, suggested exploring alternative formats, such as a New Year’s festivity.
Though, Ehlers cautioned against drastically altering the timing of the event, emphasizing the importance of the pre-Christmas period for local merchants, who reportedly generate up to 40% of thier annual sales during this time.
Andreas Kruse from the CDU voiced concerns about the quality of the mulled wine served at the previous event. He also learned that new regulations are making it more arduous to use traditional materials like bark mulch or straw, possibly impacting the overall ambiance of the winter festivities.
Looking Ahead: A Timeline for Decision-Making
Ehlers expressed optimism that significant progress will be made by the end of the month, with a final concept expected to be available by the end of May. The committee members thanked Ehlers for his presentation and requested comprehensive information following the selection of a concept. The community awaits the decision, hoping for a revitalized and engaging winter fun experiance in Vegesack.
