UP Diliman Researchers Unveil Data Analytical Technique for Tracking Cultural Evolutions

A groundbreaking development in cultural studies has emerged from the National Institute of Physics (NIP) at the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). The research team, pioneering in their approach, has devised a data analytical technique that allows the tracking of cultural changes through time. The researchers utilized principal component analysis, a statistical procedure that transforms a set of possibly correlated variables into a set of linearly uncorrelated components. This method enabled them to construct maps that visualize cultural shifts. For each survey wave, the team created two essential maps—a cross-country map and a respondent-level map.

Interpreting the Maps

The cross-country map visualizes nations as individual points within a two-dimensional cultural space. This allows for a clear comparison of cultural differences across the globe. The respondent-level map, on the other hand, illustrates survey respondents of each country as points scattered around a mean location, highlighting cultural variations within national populations.

Impact and Applications
