Statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Today, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the world pauses to honor the six million Jewish men, women, and children, along with countless others, who fell victim to systematic murder by the Nazis. This somber day compels us to reflect on one of the darkest chapters in human history and to recommit ourselves to the fundamental values of dignity and human rights.

The Urgency of Remembrance

This year’s commemoration serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked hatred, dehumanization, and indifference. It highlights our shared responsibility to ensure that the horrors of the Holocaust are never repeated.

Bearing Witness

We are deeply indebted to the brave survivors of the Holocaust, whose courage in sharing their stories is a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Preserving their testimonies and educating future generations about the Holocaust is crucial to ensuring that these lessons are never lost.

A Threat Resurges

Unfortunately, we live in a world where antisemitism and Holocaust denial are on the rise. Recent reports point to alarming trends, including increased Holocaust distortion and antisemitic rhetoric online and in public spaces. These insidious forms of hate must be met with decisive action.

Standing Together Against Hate

The United States remains steadfast in its opposition to these threats, supporting initiatives such as the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism. The country also advocates for the adoption of the Global Guidelines for Countering Antisemitism, which have gained the support of numerous countries and multilateral organizations since their launch in July 2024.

A Commitment to Justice

Marking the 80th anniversary of World War II and the liberation of Nazi concentration camps, we are reminded that atrocities like the Holocaust are not inevitable. They occur when hatred proliferates and societies fail to speak up for the vulnerable. It is our duty to combat hate, protect the marginalized, and uphold principles of justice and human rights.

The Promise of “Never Again”

Let us honor the memory of those who perished by pledges to build a world where such horrors cannot happen again. We must unite in the fight against antisemitism and all forms of hate, and remain resolute in our commitment to the promise of “Never Again.”
