In his address during the Mass, Cardinal Dolan reflected on their unexpected journey, saying, “We left Newark, New Jersey, Thursday on our way to Dublin… and we ended up here with you and we’re still. We are unable to get out due to inclement weather.”

United provided hotel accommodations and meal vouchers for the stranded passengers during their extended stay. However, the high winds prevented access to their checked luggage, leaving many without their essential clothing and belongings.
One passenger shared on social media that they went 48 hours without other clothing and faced extreme cold temperatures of about 20°F (-6°C). Additionally, passengers with limited mobility and children faced additional challenges due to the inaccessibility of their luggage.
The Limitations of a Small Airport
St. John’s International Airport, located in Newfoundland and Labrador, is a small facility that does not regularly handle large aircraft like the Boeing 777. Additionally, United Airlines has limited resources at this location, which contributed to delays in providing assistance.
A spokesperson for United explained, “The inclement weather made it difficult for us to bring additional resources to the airport, but we did everything we could to ensure the safety and comfort of our passengers.”
