UNC Greensboro Women’s Golf Competes in Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s golf team is gearing up for another challenging competition as they prepare to participate in the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational. Hosted by Mercer at the Great Waters course, this tournament spans from Friday to Sunday and will mark the second of five planned spring events for the Spartans.

UNCG has demonstrated impressive performance in previous tournaments, finishing fourth or better in four out of five fall events. They crowned their autumn series with a runner-up finish at the UNCG Collegiate, during which senior Ava Romfo claimed the individual title.

The Tournament Format:

The Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational is a three-day, 54-hole competition featuring 15 teams in a shotgun start format. Action kicks off on Friday at 12:30 p.m., continuing through Saturday and Sunday.

The Spartans’ Last Tournament:

The Spartans competed at the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate in Palm City, Florida, on Tuesday. This UNCG-hosted event saw UNCG finishing seventh with a team score of 887 (23-over-par). Although they missed winning by two strokes to Arkansas State, they performed admirably, securing a position ahead of Morehead State. East Tennessee State finished third with a tally of 881. The Spartans were a key player in打出 quality scores, posting 33 birdies, good for fourth in the field.

Key performers for UNCG included Kasey McIlvaine, who led the team and tied for sixth individually, at one-over-par. Lulu Leetham and Elle Burnette finished second and third on the team leaderboard, with McIlvaine also claiming the team’s sole eagle. Sophie Lauture contributed significantly, tying for 28th despite an 11-over-par score. Grace Holcomb rounded out the squad with a fifth-place finish and a team-best eight birdies.

Scouting the Spartans:

UNCG’s recent performances highlight their strength and stability. During the fall season, the team managed to secure top-four finishes in four out of their five events. Their impressive performance at the Golfweek Fall Challenge stands out, where they set a single-round tournament record at 13-under-par in round two at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club before claiming third place overall. Additional notable achievements include fourth place at the Clemson Invitational and a third-place tie in the Pirate Collegiate Classic.

Team standout Ava Romfo contributes significantly with her impressive 72.23 stroke average, good for second in the Southern Conference (SoCon). Kasey McIlvaine is second on the squad with a 73.13 stroke average, fifth in the SoCon. Sophie Lauture follows, ranking third with a 74.14 average, while Elle Burnette and Grace Holcomb and Julia Baeumken round out the top-five with averages of 74.81, 75.00, and 76.38 strokes per round respectively.

With three newcomers on board, including Leetham, Lauture and McIlvaine (who transferred from Marshall), the team appears ready to build on their promising start to the season.

The Next Competition:

After the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational, the Spartans will travel to Humacao, Puerto Rico. There, they will participate in the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Ball State University on March 4-6 at Palmas del Mar Golf Club.
