Hopes for a swift resolution to the conflict in Ukraine are fading as Russia imposes further preconditions for a potential meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to a statement released by the Kremlin on Saturday, such a summit is only possible if Moscow and Kyiv first reach concrete agreements on key issues. This announcement follows closely on the heels of the first direct peace talks between the two nations since the conflict escalated in 2022, held in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Dmitri Peskov, spokesman for the Russian presidency, emphasized the necessity of pre-summit consensus, stating that a meeting could only occur as a result of agreements between the two camps.
