Tragic Accident Shuts Down A6 Highway
A severe traffic accident on the Autobahn 6 (A6) east of Heilbronn resulted in two fatalities and serious injuries to four others. The incident led to a lengthy closure of the highway between Kreuz Weinsberg and bretzfeld in the direction of Nuremberg.Authorities have since cleared the accident site, according to a police statement released at noon.
Circumstances surrounding the collision
Preliminary investigations suggest that an 85-year-old driver in an SUV attempted to overtake a truck near Bretzfeld. During this maneuver, the driver veered too far to the left, prompting a 43-year-old driver behind him to take evasive action. This resulted in a collision where the second vehicle left the road, overturned, and came to rest in a nearby field.
Lack of Seatbelts contributed to Fatalities
Tragically, police reports indicate that four female passengers in the rear of the vehicle were not wearing seatbelts. Among them, a 31-year-old and a 42-year-old succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Two othre women, aged 21 and 46, sustained serious injuries but are reportedly not in life-threatening condition.
The driver and front-seat passenger of the crashed vehicle were wearing seatbelts and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The 85-year-old driver who initiated the overtaking maneuver and his 79-year-old passenger were unharmed, though the latter was treated for shock.They declined further medical attention at the scene.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter and multiple paramedics, were dispatched to the scene. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, and the total cost of the damage is yet to be determined. Three pastors were present at the scene to provide support.
