Finnish language and culture study

In a bachelor’s degree program, there are additional rewards if you have completed studies in Finnish language and culture. If you are eligible for a progress-based scholarship, you can also apply for a scholarship based on Finnish language and culture study (study completed in the previous academic year).

You can apply for an additional scholarship worth EUR 200/5 ECTS credits after each study year to complete your studies of Finnish language and culture during your studies at Xamk. Students in the bachelor’s programme typically study Finnish for 5-10 ECTS credits in the first and second academic years. These studies start with beginners and aim to reach basic language proficiency levels of A1 and A2.

If you reach the intermediate B1 level of Finnish during your studies, you can receive a scholarship of 5,000 euros upon graduation. Achieving this level requires you to actively learn the language outside of your Xamk studies.

You are awarded this scholarship upon graduation, when you have completed the National Certificate of Proficiency in the Finnish Language (YKI) to the required level of competence and attach a copy of the certificate to your scholarship application. Please see further information on national language proficiency certificates and competency levels on the Finnish National Agency for Education website.

The YKI system is Finland’s official language proficiency test, and the certificate is used for various purposes, such as proving your language proficiency to apply for a job in Finland.
