Pressure on global chokepoints drives Asia’s increased use of Arctic Trade Routes

Asia’s turn to the Arctic is unfolding this month as congestion in established maritime chokepoints intensifies. NPR notes that the pressure on these routes is prompting the region to explore alternative passages. The timing coincides with a South Korean containership completing the Northern Sea Route in 21 days and arriving in the United Kingdom, a milestone reported by The Maritime Executive. The Japan Times confirms that South Korean carrier PanStar is scheduling additional Arctic trips following a 20‑day voyage to Europe.

UA.NEWS adds that the firm is considering up to three Arctic voyages to the continent. IndexBox says South Korea has unveiled a KRW120 billion annual fund dedicated to Arctic shipping.
