Gamers and preservationists have a new reason to celebrate. A Final Fantasy VII spin-off, long thought lost, has been recovered after nearly 20 years.

The game was saved by a preservationist who spent $900 and built a 90-GPU server farm to crack the game's code. The effort was detailed by Time Extension, Console Creatures, Kotaku and Wccftech.

The game's return raises questions about the future of digital preservation and the lengths to which enthusiasts will go to save beloved titles.
