This move occurred concurrently with the reinstatement of All-Star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. from the injured list. Witt Jr. immediately returned to the lineup, recording three hits in an 8-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins. The simultaneous transactions serve as a high-profile maneuver to integrate the team's primary offensive anchor back into active play. While the activation of Witt Jr. highlights the team's push for roster stability, the decision to cut ties with Strahm and Velazquez marks a definitive change in the team's current personnel strategy.

Coverage from MLB.com and the Kansas City Star frames the departure of Strahm against a backdrop of bullpen struggles. Outlets including Yahoo Sports and Heavy.com have linked the release of Strahm to his prior tenure with the Philadelphia Phillies, drawing comparisons between his recent performance and the trade history of the reliever. The release of Velazquez, noted for his previous time with the New York Yankees, was detailed by MLB Trade Rumors. Beyond these departures, the broader landscape of roster movement in the American League includes the Cleveland Guardians' decision to call up prospect Angel Genao.

Articles from ESPN and CBS Sports describe this promotion as a significant developmental milestone for the organization, situating Genao within ongoing discussions regarding the team's future roster composition. This development contrasts with the tactical thinning of the Royals' depth chart. Future updates regarding Strahm and Velazquez depend on whether these players clear waivers or are signed by other organizations. The Royals have not stated whether further roster adjustments are planned as they navigate the remainder of the season following their series-opening win.
