Following 13 days of training camp, head coach Todd Monken has designated a starting quarterback for the team’s preseason opener against the Chicago Bears. The selection process involved extensive monitoring of repetitions during practice sessions, which previously featured a rotation of first-team snaps between both players. Todd Monken indicated that the chosen starter is expected to play the first half of the preseason game. While coverage from outlets including FOX 8 News and NBC Sports confirms a decision has been reached regarding the starter for this specific matchup, discussions regarding the Week 1 regular-season starter continue to circulate.

Public discourse surrounding the decision has been significant, with various commentators questioning the criteria for the selection. While Yahoo Sports reports indicate the competition has maintained a clear frontrunner, other outlets like Dawgs By Nature and The Land On Demand suggest the ongoing rep sharing may imply broader organizational considerations regarding the future of the position. The distribution of practice reps has served as the primary indicator for analysts evaluating the status of the competition. Coverage suggests that despite a stated plan for alternating starts, instances of Deshaun Watson taking increased first-team reps have fueled speculation about his standing relative to Shedeur Sanders.

Whether the performance in the preseason opener will dictate the permanent starter for the regular season remains unconfirmed. Reporters have not yet specified the exact strategic objectives Todd Monken has set for the quarterbacks during the exhibition period. How the team intends to balance the long-term development of the roster against the immediate need for a game-day leader is not explicitly detailed in current assessments.
