Fatal Fire Breaks Out During Lunar New Year Celebrations in Manila’s Chinatown

MANILA, Philippines — Amidst the festive celebrations of Lunar New Year, a tragic fire broke out in Manila’s Chinatown, specifically at the Anchor SkySuites condominium complex in Sta. Cruz. The blaze, which proved fatal, occurred just hours before the New Year festivities were to have reached their peak.

The Devastating Incident

The fire, which lasted over an hour, struck the 56-story Anchor SkySuites building at 3:25 a.m. local time and was extinguished at 4:51 a.m. Despite the efforts of over 30 firetrucks that responded to the scene, the intense heat and flames resulted in the deaths of two housemaids who were trapped on the 35th floor. Fortunately, the condo unit’s owner and relatives managed to escape the inferno.

Extent of Damage

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the property damage was extensive, totaling P4.5 million. The fire not only claimed the lives of the two housemaids but also caused irreparable damage to the structure and belongings of the affected residents.

Additional Fires Reported

The night of the tragic incident wasn’t without further drama, as two other fires also erupted in the city. At Fu Yong Mansion condominium in Binondo and within a residential area in Tondo, fires affected five houses, adding to the chaos and grief of the already shaky night.

Fire Incident in Pasay

In a separate incident, located in Pasay, a Korean restaurant in Barangay 76 caught fire, affecting not just the establishment it was in but also a neighboring one. This fire led to additional property damage, amounting to P4.55 million.

Heroic Efforts of the Firefighters

The heroic efforts of firefighters from the Bureau of Fire Protection and volunteers couldn’t prevent the tragic loss of life. However, they managed to save others and reduce the damage to a certain extent. Eight BFP firetrucks and 27 volunteer firetrucks were deployed to combat the fires across different parts of the city.

Injuries to First Responders

While the firefighters bravely fought to save lives and control the blazes, one of them suffered a minor injury. A firefighter suffered a laceration in his left finger, highlighting the risks they face during such critical situations.

Arson Probes Initiated

Arson probers are currently investigating the fire at the Anchor SkySuites to determine the cause and prevent similar incidents in the future. The tragic outcome has raised concerns about fire safety protocols in residential buildings, particularly those housing domestic helpers.

Conclusion: Reflections on Safety and Prevention

As the city mourns the loss, it also turns its attention to safety and prevention measures. Ensuring that all residential buildings, especially those with multiple tenants or domestic helpers, are equipped with proper fire safety systems and ordinances strictly enforced, is essential to prevent such tragedies in the future.

While the Lunar New Year celebrations brought joy and unity to millions, they were marred by a devastating tragedy that serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of safety. It is a testament to the resilience and strength of the Filipino people that amidst such darkness, acts of heroism and solidarity shine brightly.
