Fatal Tragedy: 16 Pakistanis Die as Boat Capsizes off Libya

Islamabad: A devastating incident occurred this weekend when a boat carrying illegal migrants to Europe capsized off the coast of Zawiya, located in northwestern Libya. The tragedy claimed at least 16 Pakistani lives among 65 migrants.

Prime Minister’s Urgent Call

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expedite the identification of the deceased. The ministry stated that their embassy in Tripoli has dispatched a team to a local hospital near Marsa Dela port to assist with identification efforts.

Updated figures

On Tuesday, the government disclosed that out of the 63 Pakistanis on board, the bodies of 16 were recovered, while 37 survivors were rescued. Tragically, 10 individuals were still unaccounted for. According to the ministry, three survivors are currently being cared for by the Pakistani embassy in Tripoli.

Disturbing Pattern

This incident is a stark reminder of the risks associated with illegal migration. Less than a month ago, 50 Pakistanis perished when a vessel carrying 86 migrants capsized off the coast of Morocco on January 16. Even more recently, a migrant boat heading to Italy survived by a handful of survivors, leaving at least 300 Pakistanis dead when it sank off the Greek coast in June 2023.

Human Trafficking Alert

In light of these staggering numbers, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has included Libya in a list of 15 transit countries notorious for human trafficking activities. Year after year, thousands of Pakistanis pay hefty sums to smugglers for perilous illegal journeys to Europe, driven by the hope of finding employment and sending money back home. Many also undertake these dangerous routes to seek refuge from conflicts and religious persecution.

Detour to Libya

According to Pakistani authorities, human traffickers typically funnel migrants seeking illegal entry into Europe through Libya, a North African nation situated approximately 300 kilometers east of Italy. From there, they are either transported by boat to Europe or relocated to coastal cities in Mauritania and Morocco in West Africa.

Recent Developments

On Monday, the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM) expressed deep concern over the discovery of dozens of migrants’ bodies in mass graves in southeastern Libya. A few days earlier, Libyan authorities stated that they had recovered the remains of 28 sub-Saharan migrants in the Kufra district, a region where the group was allegedly subjected to detention and torture.

Investigation Continues

The circumstances surrounding the migrants’ deaths and the identities of those found in the graves remain unknown. The IOM, shocked by the discovery, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the plight of these individuals. Their findings came after a police operation that freed hundreds of migrants from traffickers.

Preventative Measures

Growing awareness of these incidents has prompted calls for stricter controls on illegal migration. Authorities are working to educate potential migrants about the risks and seek alternative, safer pathways for legal migration. Initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of forced movement, such as conflict and persecution, are gaining momentum.

The Human Cost of Desperation

The repeated occurrence of these tragic events highlights the desperate plight faced by individuals who believe that risking their lives is the only way to escape hardship. As the international community grapples with the complex issue of human trafficking and the refugee crisis, one thing remains clear: preventive measures and support for legal migration are urgently needed to safeguard the lives of vulnerable individuals.
