Tottenham Hotspur Update Their Europa League Squad: Timo Werner’s Future Uncertain
Tottenham Hotspur have unveiled their revised Europa League squad following their progression to the last 16 of the competition.
One significant omission from the updated squad is Timo Werner, who appeared in the group-stage lineup but has now been left out.
Tottenham included three new faces in the squad: Djed Spence, along with recent signings Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso.
Elsewhere, Werner’s exclusion comes alongside that of Radu Dragusin and Fraser Forster. January signing Antonin Kinsky also did not make the cut.
According to transfer insider Ben Jacobs, Tottenham’s decision to update their squad also sheds light on Werner’s potential future with the club.
Tottenham Not Expected to Trigger Timo Werner’s Buy Option
Werner joined Tottenham on a six-month loan deal from RB Leipzig in January 2023, scoring two goals and providing three assists in 13 Premier League appearances.
This performance led Tottenham to extend his loan with an £8.5 million option to purchase Werner at the end of the season.
However, the 2023-24 campaign has been less successful for the German striker, who managed just one goal and three assists in 26 games across all competitions.
Ben Jacobs reports that Tottenham are not expected to exercise Werner’s buy option at the season’s conclusion.
Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, publicly criticized Werner after a 1-1 draw with Rangers in the Europa League in December.
“He wasn’t playing anywhere near the level he should,” Postecoglou stated in his post-match press conference.
“When you’ve got 18-year-olds it’s not acceptable to me. I said that to Timo. He’s a senior international, he’s a German international.”
