Torbjörn Jansson is back at home on the mother’s street in Dalsland.

Or, rather, on the mother’s farm.

-It’s full, but it must be, otherwise I go crazy, says the 70-year-old to Trav365.

During his active career, Torbjörn Jansson won over 4,700 races, including the Elite race, the Swedish Travderby, the Criterion, the Prix de France and the World Cup race, just to name a few.

At Hästgalan 2018 he was named Travet’s honorary ambassador and in July the same year he was also elected to the trotting sport’s Hall of Fame. He is also the only driver who won the race on all of Sweden’s 33 trot tracks.

“It was very big”

It has now been over a year and a half since Torbjörn Jansson, 70, announced that he will quit as a trot driver in October 2023.

– I try to be a realist in most situations and am 69 years old. Most people my age have been quitting for a long time. I thought it was just as good to quit before anyone knocks on the shoulder and says, “Now you probably have to give you,” he told Trav365 then.

You had a long and successful career. What are the best memories of the cousin career?

– It is obviously the Elite race in 1985 with Meadow Road, but even when I got to go over and win at Meadowlands with him. It was very big at that time. The derby was also a real height, of course. Those classic races are great to win.

Sold the million yard

Last summer, Torbjörn Sården Sailing sold in Almunge, a few miles outside Uppsala.

“There are many memories, but I felt it was time now,” he told Trav365 in connection with sales on the farm, which had a price tag of SEK 9.9 million.

In August, he and his partner Eva moved to Dalsland. Home to Dalsland. Because it was there, outside Åmål Torbjörn grew up, in the 1950s.

Have you come to rest as a pensioner?

– Yes, we are very happy Eva and I. We have a small farm that is nicely located on a lake. We live a good life. It is my mother’s old farm that I have actually owned since 2008, but it has obviously been neglected with the life I have lived.

– But I live an active life, it’s full action all the time. If you have a small farm, even if it is small, you always have to do. It’s full, but it must be, otherwise I go crazy.

“The first time I spoke”

Torbjörn tells us that there is a great deal of interest among people in the areas where he lives and that he himself still follows the trot.

– I follow it really good and go on some large rattles now in the summer. Then all hunters are around here. I have always been interested in hunting and join in a hunting team, we chase the usual you are chasing in Sweden. Moose, deer, wild boar, deer and a little of each, says Torbjörn.

You also gave speeches during the inauguration of the Elite race. How was it?

– The speech itself was not difficult, I am used to talking to a lot of people. But on the other hand, I became a little puff when I got an email that I would give speeches, I just thought I would be involved in the inauguration. It was actually the first time I spoke. But it went well, I have not received any negative feedback anyway.

Torbjörn Jansson has not lost the suction completely after running a trotting race again.

“Can imagine driving again”

Do you get many questions about a comeback?

– No, I can’t say that. But I ran a race in Årjäng last fall. It was a special race, where you had to have the hunter’s degree to drive. We’ll see if they hear this year, I would like to drive again, says Torbjörn.

How did it go in the race? Torbjörn won and defeated Björn Goop, among others.

The desire to run a race has not disappeared completely.

– I am a realist and it is difficult to believe that you should be able to compete, it is just looking at the birth number. But I know absolutely, especially now that the weather and nice horses, Torbjörn concludes.
