Japan national team defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who is from Avispa Fukuoka and left Arsenal in the summer of 2025, recently joined Ajax in the Dutch first division. He became a teammate of defender Akira Itakura, but there is a possibility that he will leave the team as early as the end of the 2025/26 season. There are also reports of interest from several clubs in the Bundesliga, including Eintracht Frankfurt, which hosts midfielder Ritsu Doan.

On January 6th, Dutch “Football Transfers” featured Ajax’s reinforcement strategy. “Ajax may acquire Tomiyasu’s successor for next season,” the report said. Noting that Tomiyasu’s contract with Ajax ends in June 2026, he reported on the player’s departure as follows.

“Tomiyasu is an experienced multi-player who can play both the left and right full-back and center back positions, and can use both his left and right feet equally well. However, it is still completely unclear and cannot be calculated whether Tomiyasu will succeed at Ajax or whether he will stay beyond next season. There is a possibility that he will leave the team again after this season.”

In addition, Germany’s “Husubal Minister” has reported the possibility of a transfer to the Bundesliga as of the end of December 2025. It is reported that “RB Leipzig is showing strong interest” and “Borussia Dortmund, Frankfurt, and Wolfsburg are also keeping an eye on his movements,” so there is a possibility that he could become teammates with midfielder Ritsu Doan and defender Keita Kosugi in Frankfurt.

Reports surrounding Tomiyasu’s departure highlight the player’s high ability, as well as the difficulty of surviving at Europe’s top level, and the concerns of players who have been forced to miss a long period due to injury. A challenge with Ajax will be a chance to prove his worth, but depending on his performance in the Netherlands, a move to the Bundesliga is likely to become a reality.
