Tom De Koning Plays It Cool on Contract Speculation, Eyes Carlton’s Upcoming Season
Carlton ruckman Tom De Koning has maintained an air of mystery regarding his future with the Blues. Speaking on Wednesday, he expressed that he is “definitely not setting a timeline” on his decision to either continue with Carlton or take a lucrative contract elsewhere.
Focus on the Here and Now
During his media session, De Koning emphasized his current focus on the team’s upcoming Round 1 match against Richmond. “My main focus right now is playing Round 1 against Richmond, waiting for that first bounce,” he said. “Everything else is happening behind the scenes between my manager and the club.”
Despite speculation about a contract offer as high as $12 million over seven years, reportedly from St Kilda, De Koning maintained that his primary concern is the team’s performance. “My happiness with where everything is sitting right now is derived from being with the group of players at Carlton,” he stated.
Team Success Centre of Attention
De Koning, aged 25, has played 78 AFL games for Carlton. He believes it’s an advantage to be in a position similar to his teammates, such as Patrick Cripps, Charlie Curnow, and Sam Walsh. “It’s nothing my teammates haven’t gone through before,” he said, highlighting the collective experience. “We’re in a good position, and I’m confident that we can have success very soon.”
Support from the Club
De Koning expressed his gratitude for the support of both Carlton and its fans. “I have absolutely loved my time here,” he said, acknowledging the club’s role in his development. “Planning and working towards success is shared with my teammates and coaches, which makes it easier to manage any distractions around contract talks.”
The ruckman also praised the team’s pre-season efforts, which he believes put them in a strong position as the season approaches. “We’ve done a lot of hard work, and I’m excited to see our efforts pay off on the field,” he added.
Contract Speculation: What’s Next?
While De Koning is keeping his options open, he has consistently maintained that whatever decision he makes will be in the best interest of himself and his family. “There’s a lot to weigh up,” he admitted, “but the most important thing is doing what feels right for me and my loved ones.”
Players at his level are often subjected to such speculation, and De Koning is no exception. However, he remains steadfast in his commitment to Carlton and the Blues’ upcoming season. “Carlton is the club that picked me,” he said, emphasizing his loyalty. “I feel like I’ve grown with this group, and we’re ready to take on the AFL in 2025.”
