How can biological age be reduced?
Diet and lifestyle seem to have such a strong influence on biological age that they can reduce it by several years within a few weeks. Aging plays an important role in the development of many diseases, so reducing biological age can help people live healthier and longer lives.
The new study, with the participation of researchers from McGill University, provides for the first time the scientific evidence that changes in lifestyle and diet can bring about an immediate and rapid reduction in biological age. The study was published in the English-language journal “AGING-US”.
Special intervention program examined
For the current research work, 43 healthy adult men between the ages of 50 and 72 years were examined. They took part in an eight week long program that covered diet, sleep, exercise and relaxation. In addition, the participants were given additional probiotics and phytonutrients.
The combined intervention program was designed by those skilled in the art to target a specific biological mechanism called DNA methylation, and in particular the DNA methylation patterns that have been identified as highly predictive of biological age.
Biological age was reduced by three years
The measures made it possible to bring about a statistically significant reduction in biological age by compensating for the so-called DNA methylation. The participants actually had a biological age three years younger than the control group, according to the team.
The results of the new study appear to be in line with the very few existing studies on the subject that have so far examined the potential for lowering biological age, and expand them significantly, the researchers explain. They are currently recruiting participants for a larger study that is expected to confirm the results of the current study, reports study author Dr. Kara Fitzgerald.
Improve well-being and life expectancy
The epigenetic Dr. Moshe Szyf of McGill University explains in a press release: “The uniqueness of Dr. Fitzgerald insists that their study developed a natural but mechanistically driven strategy to manipulate our body’s methylation system. This study provides the first glimpse into the possibility of using natural changes to target epigenetic processes and improve our wellbeing and perhaps even our longevity and life expectancy. ”
DNA methylation patterns have become a leading tool in evaluating and tracking biological aging, which describes the accumulation of damage and loss of function in human cells, tissues and organs. Such damage is what causes the diseases of aging, the experts emphasize.
“It is extremely exciting that diet and lifestyle practices, including specific nutrients and food compounds that are known to selectively alter DNA methylation, are able to have such an impact on DNA methylation patterns we know they predict aging and age-related diseases. I believe this, along with the new opportunities for all of us to measure and track our DNA methylation age, will open up significant new opportunities for both scientists and consumers, ”added Dr. Fitzgerald added.
