Third Man Arrested in Fatal Nightclub Stabbing in Dublin
A third individual has been apprehended in connection with the tragic stabbing of a man after a brawl erupted at a Dublin nightclub over the weekend. This latest arrest comes as police intensify their investigation into the incident.
Details of the Third Arrest
The newly arrested suspect, believed to be in his 20s, was taken into custody by Gardaí on Monday evening. He is currently being held at a Dublin Regional Garda Station.
Previous Arrests
Earlier in the week, two other suspects were detained. One was apprehended by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in Belfast, responding to a request from An Garda Síochána. This man had been on bail for possession of an offensive weapon at the time of his arrest. He was about to board a ferry to Britain, allegedly attempting to flee to Liverpool.
The second suspect, also in his 20s, was captured by Gardaí after thorough searches in various areas of County Dublin. He is now being held at Pearse Street Garda Station.
About the Victim
The victim of the fatal stabbing has been identified as Quham Babatunde, a 34-year-old Nigerian asylum seeker. He resided at the Ballyogan international protection accommodation center in South Dublin, having relocated there from Citywest accommodation center the previous year.
The Incident
Mr. Babatunde was present at the Twenty Two club on South Anne Street, Friday night for an African music event. The evening turned violent as two groups of people engaged in a physical altercation on the premises, which then spilled onto the street.
During the fight, Mr. Babatunde was severely stabbed, suffering multiple injuries including one to his heart. Another man in his 30s, while also stabbed, survived with minor injuries.
Footage and Investigation
The tragic assault was captured on CCTV footage, widely shared on social media platforms. Police have reviewed extensive surveillance footage and are confident that they have identified all individuals involved in the violence.
Justice Minister’s Statement
Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan addressed the situation on Sunday, confirming that An Garda Síochána had initiated a murder investigation and was progressing well in uncovering the details surrounding the incident.
Emergency Response
Gardaí were notified of the serious injury shortly after 3:00 AM on Saturday. Upon arrival, they found a man in his 30s critically injured and unresponsive.
Emergency services personnel provided immediate on-scene treatment and then transported him to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save him, he expired shortly after arrival.
PSNI Involvement
The PSNI arrested a 23-year-old man in Belfast, detaining him under the Criminal Jurisdiction Act 1975. This individual is also in custody and the PSNI stated they would collaborate closely with An Garda Síochána in their investigation.
Appeal for Witnesses
An Garda Síochána continues to seek information from any witnesses who may have observed events in the vicinity of South Anne Street/Duke Lane Upper between 2:45 AM and 3:30 AM on Saturday. They are also eager to receive any additional footage from the surrounding areas at that time.
