The project ’23 spins’ by the artist Jaume Geli, created in social networks During the confinement, he had to collect twenty-three contributions from various artists: a digital reproduction accompanied by a small writing, which originally had to be carried out the previous 23 days of Sant Jordi in April.
But the impact has been so great that it has not only exceeded the 200 participants in different disciplines around the world, but the project is still alive with an exhibition, which is exhibited until the end of July at the Fundació Valvi, and the creation of an internet space where, in addition to being open to more contributions, it has become at a meeting and information point for each of the participants.
It has been shown that the pandemic has the capacity to shake many things, but in no case does it diminish the creative capacity of many of the artists. Geli started this collective formula to extract revenue from the adversity of the situation and the artists found in it a way to express themselves from the beginning. This project of “artistic communism”, as its promoter names it, harbors personal and sharp thorns. Works far from the kindest artistic production. “During the confinement the doors to the outside were closed and I thought about doing one more work on the interior landscape. I wanted to analyze what awakens us the fact of being locked up or that would also serve to remind us other times that we have not had a good time ”, details the artist from Girona.
But the need for the sector to express itself was great and Geli began to receive a multitude of proposals, easily surpassing the 23 that it had initially planned. After contributions from her closest circle, they came from the Catalan sphere and from countries such as Japan, Australia, France, Greece, the United Kingdom and the United States. “It was an unstoppable avalanche. One artist told another and so we expanded, “says the artist, who adds that” people have wanted to express themselves and say theirs in this difficult context that we live in now. ” Among those who have participated are illustrators such as Txell Darné and Marc Currià, painters such as Joan Mateu, the illustrator Pilarín Bayés, the sculptor Josep Massana or the plastic artist Tom Carr.
Each image is accompanied by a kind of haikus all written by Geli, who usually writes in parallel to his works. “I am writing about what I create and I make it all grow together: the works and the writing,” he stresses. It is five or six verses, without rhyme, but that in a few words explain or complement what is being visualized. All these works, according to Geli, exemplify “a retained tension.” “There is no comfort in most of the drawings. They are small stories that in a normal state would not have come out nor would they have been shown in an exhibition, but in this context they would. Writing about them has been easy for me. If they had been cold, it would have cost me more, “she says.
Both on Instagram and on Facebook the different digital reproductions were posted with those written in chronological order. It started with the plastic arts and later it was expanded to other performing arts as they arrived. Songs, dance choreographies, audiovisuals or poems also appear. Other participants are the musical groups Quico el Célio, Noi i el Mut de Ferreries and Morgat Morgat or the composer Paco Viciana.
Exhibition until July 31
Up to July 31, the 200 plastic works are shown in the Valvi gallery and audiovisual pieces and posters with the same meaning made in this case by users of the Fundació Mas Casadevall, a space for life and work for people, are projected with autism spectrum disorders, and also others made by children between 4 and 12 years old. “You have the leading role in this project when you have to go out. Then you are part of the set. No one is more of a protagonist than another. It is the beauty of the proposal ”, details its promoter. In the sample, the different works are united by a line of thorny brambles located at eye level from which the 200 leaves hang.
This long-distance project with a multiplying effect has also found its place on the web www.23espines.cat, in which it is not only presented as a proposal for collective participation, but each artist also shows who they are and what they do. Soon all kinds of presentations and acts of each of them will be hung as an agenda. An opportunity to meet and get to know them. In some cases, even new projects have already come out among them. A physical meeting is pending to meet in person. In fact, it was planned but it was canceled due to a possible rebound of the Covid-19. They will schedule it later.
