As if it were a rugby match and it was a kick to follow the ball, the celebration of the Diada de Sant Jordi this 2020, a year marked by the pandemic, went from April 23 to July 23.

The sector of the book hoped that, this summer, it would no longer have been alarmed and that there would be less danger of contagion to be able to take the stops to the street. The first happened, the confinement was over, but the second, finally, no, because of the outbreaks, also in Barcelona, a city that is usually the epicenter of Sant Jordi.

That is why the La Vanguardia Readers’ Challenge is focused today on analyzing not only the challenge of being able to celebrate a cultural event of this magnitude today, since it normally brings large numbers of citizens to the streets, but also what future awaits the book sector and, especially, physical bookstores.

“A Sant Jordi silenced”. With this title, the reader Joan Soldevila Adán has shared a series of photographs to reflect on this second attempt to celebrate Sant Jordi this year.

“The infamous virus left us without the Sant Jordi spring festival (Diada del Llibre i de la Rosa) and it seems that it leaves us without its summer substitute,” he regrets.

“Despite everything, I think even more, books will continue to provide unlimited emotions to their readers because this solitary pleasure will continue to be preferred by millions of people around the world,” he says hopefully.

And the truth is that, at least, the online sales of books and roses seem to be holding up.

“Reading opens new horizons for you, gives wings to your imagination and makes you a little wiser. For this and many other things, books will continue to be an important part of our lives, ”he says, convinced.

Despite the outbreaks of Covid-19 and the difficulties of the crisis caused by the coronavirus, it seems that optimism still prevails.
