The Google Phone application could add support for recording calls, the code suggests

The code added in the latest version of the Google Phone application suggests that it could support the recording of native calls in the future. XDA developers He was the first to detect the code, which appeared in the application downloaded in a Pixel 4. The dialer application adds a new design, icon and other assets consistent with a call recording function. The Google Phone application is currently the default dialer application on devices that include Pixel and Android One phones.

Call recording has had a bumpy path on Android over the years. The feature used to be widely available in third-party applications through an official call recording API, but this was removed with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Then, with Android 9 Pie, Google eliminated the alternative solutions that application developers had been using to continue offering them. In many places, this recording of calls limited to specific OEM dialers, some unflattering alternative solutions and rooted phones. There have been reports that Google is working to return the widespread call recording functionality to Android, but the “security and privacy implications” prevented it from arriving with Android 10.

Currently, Android call recording seems to be available through third-party applications in some countries and devices, but not in others, at least according to an application developer. The slightly confusing situation probably has something to do with call recording laws, which differ greatly between different countries, and even between individual states in the US. UU. While some places allow one person to record a call without informing the other participant, others require that both give their consent. Adding functionality to the Google Phone application would not change the law, but it could make it easier to record calls in places where it is less restricted.

While the code could mean that Google is working to take call recording to Pixel and Android One phones, XDA speculates that its launch could be limited to Xiaomi devices. The code appeared in the Google Phone application shortly after Xiaomi announced that it would switch to using the Google dialer in Europe instead of its own MIUI dialer, which previously allowed call recording.

There is no guarantee that the discovered code will become a complete feature, but after Google did a good job with the Pixel 4’s Recorder application, it’s hard not to see the potential here.
