While Microsoft and Nintendo have driven and pushed the industry towards a future that includes the cross-play console, as a market leader, Sony Interactive Entertainment has dragged its feet and started supporting the feature once the backlash has reached significant levels. Or at least that's what it looks like from the outside, but according to one developer, it's quite likely that it's not a question of Sony wanting to fully embrace the function, but if possible.

Speaking with GamingBolt, Where bees make honey developer Brian Wilson has revealed that Sony may not be reluctant to play ball on cross-play with Nintendo and Microsoft because it has less to gain than the other two, but because, well, development is difficult.

"The more I was in this business, the more I learned that development is much more difficult than it looks," Wilson said. "That said, I don't think Sony is hesitant if it wants to, but rather if it can."

Wilson continues, noting that he is skeptical that cross-platform gaming will be a distinctive feature of the games in the immediate future, but ultimately believes that all parties involved can break down the barriers.

"I think once and if everything will work together, it will become the norm and this is really interesting for Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo."

As you may know, Sony currently has a type of cross-play beta console in progress, which has allowed some bigger games to enter the function, like Fortnite is Rocket League. But that's all, and who knows when it will change. In particular, Sony was rather silent about the function since it had initially announced, suggesting that it didn't want to do much more with it, or that it was still banging its head against the wall trying to figure it out.

In the past, Sony has suggested that developers implement cross-play of the console on the system, but many developers have scolded it, suggesting that it is not Sony to bounce the ball from its field.

However, as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think or hit me on Twitter @Tyler_Fischer_ and let me know there. Will cross-play be a distinctive feature of next-gen consoles?
