RuneScape is a very old online game, but it managed to have its highest player membership in 2019.
RuneScape was launched in 2001. It has a subscription and a free plan. The developer Jagex points out that the game has more than 1.1 million subscribers, while “many millions more” play the free version.
The old MMORPG was so successful because 2019 was the first full year that Old School RuneScape was available for both PCs and mobile devices. Old School RuneScape is how the name is applied. It is a version of the game based on its previous version, while the modern RuneScape works simultaneously. This is a model that we are seeing emerge for the MMOs that have been around for a long time, since World of Warcraft also has its own old-school version with World of Warcraft Classic.
The mobile version of Old School RuneScape only had 8 million installations in 2019. It attracts many nostalgic fans.
Jagex is also preparing to launch the modern version of RuneScape for mobile devices, with an early access release for Android and iOS later this year.
