Mum snares paedophile grandad on Facebook after sexually abused her as child

A young woman who was sexually abused by her grandfather when she was a child snared the paedophile on Facebook years later.

Jade Edwards was just 13-years-old when her grandad Joseph Edwards, who was her "best friend", abused her first time while her grandmother was asleep upstairs.

Seven years later, the Liverpool woman tricked Edwards, now 69, admitting the abuse and his sick Facebook messages to his conviction.

Joseph was jailed for 15 months after being found guilty of a number of sexual offenses.

Jade, now 23, has bravely waived her anonymity to speak out about her grandad's sordid abuse, how she brought him to an end

The stay-at-home mum said: "Growing up, I was my favorite girl. He was my best friend in the world, and I loved being around him."

In June 2009, when Jade was 13, she was watching TV with Joseph at his house when he groped her.

Jade said: "Grandma was asleep upstairs, so we were left alone in the living room.

"I was so confused, I didn't understand what had just happened.

Edwards sent sick messages to his granddaughter

"He then flicked the TV channels and acted like nothing happened, so I ignored it."

Nine months later, Joseph took Jade on a trip to Southport beach after school.

But when they arrived, Joseph parked on a quiet road and turned off the engine.

Moments later he groped and kissed her.

Jade said: "I felt like I was going to be sick.

The messages led to Edwards' conviction

"I felt tears pouring down my face while he did it," she added.

Afterwards, Joseph warned Jade not to tell her grandma or her parents. Traumatised, Jade kept quiet back at home.

The following day, Joseph called Jade and told her he was parked around the corner from her aunty's home.

Jade said: "I nervously walked over to his car, and saw him smiling. He asked if I was hungry and if I wanted to get pizza."

"I looked back at the house, wanting to run away, but I felt so trapped.

"I got in, and he drove us to the beach again.

"Forty minutes later we arrived and he bought us a large pepperoni pizza to eat in the car.

"For a moment, it felt like everything was normal.

But she said her grandfather groped her and began to kiss her.

"I began to cry again, it was humiliating and scary," she added.

After that, the abuse continued.

Jade said: "We have a lot of pizza during those trips to the beach, that I ended up putting on a stone in a year.

"He began telling me he was in love with me, it was horrible.

"When I reached 16, I had had enough.

"I threatened someone, so he listened, and the abuse finally stopped."

Then in July 2012, 17-year-old Joseph.

Worried that she had no evidence, she came up with a plan.

Jade says: "I decided to get proof myself. Messaged Grandad on Facebook and asked him" why did you do this to me?

"He replied, 'You just do it for me, I just want you in all ways if that's okay'?

"I messaged again asking why, and he replied, 'I am sorry I can't stop it, I love you so much, sorry for loving you so much you are just so good looking'.

Jade says her parents didn't believe her after she showed them the messages

"I was so relieved he admitted it.

"But then I showed my parents, and they didn't believe me.

"I was heartbroken, and decided not to report it."

She tried to get her life on, and in November 2016, she bravely plucked up the courage to go to the police station.

She said: "I told them everything had happened to me, and I showed them to the Facebook messages.

"He was arrested the next day, and the messages were used as evidence.

"Sickeningly, grandad called me to liar and denied all charged against him.

"To make matters worse, my family took his side in court.

"I was betrayed by everyone I loved."

Finally, in October 2018, Joseph Edwards, of Simon's Croft, Netherton, Bootle, was found of six counts of sexual activity with a child at Liverpool Crown Court.

He was jailed for 15 months.

Jade said: "It didn't feel like long enough, but I was relieved he was behind bars.

"Every day I wish I was abused by a stranger, not my grandad.

"I've been trying to move on with my life by being a mum to my two kids.

"I may have lost my family to you, but I spoke out and that is what matters."
