A group of mountaineers found and saved “El Canelo”, a Creole dog, at the top of Pico de Orizaba. Before the rescue, a mountaineer had published a photo with the animal on the mountain and it went viral on social networks.
The mountaineer Hilario Aguilar Aguilar, a resident of Ciudad Serdán, Puebla, led the group of people who rescued the dog after learning that I was on top of the volcano.
The animal would have climbed the mountain because it followed different visitors to Pico de Orizaba, who offered him food during his journey.
Members of the High Mountain School of the Mexican Alpine Club climbed the south face to rescue the dog, which was delivered to Fatima del Ángel Palacios, mountaineer, animal protector and one of the people who promoted the rescue.
Fátima del Ángel will take care of the animal until its state of health is in the best conditions and “El Canelo” can be given up for adoption.
It is presumed that the dog was at the top of the volcano for almost a month, between the snow and the 20 degrees below zero that are registered in the place. After his rescue, it was indicated that he was thin, malnourished, with injured legs and reddened eyes from solar radiation.
The mountaineer’s selfie with “El Canelo” prompted other mountaineers to come to his rescue.
“In the photos that were uploaded, he appeared malnourished, with a lesion in a little leg and very red eyes due to the solar radiation due to the height. After the five thousand meters, the ultraviolet rays and the reflections of the sun in the snow they could blind him”Hilario Aguilar shared on social networks.
Fátima del Ángel contacted the mountaineer Hilario due to her concern for “El Canelo” and both coordinated the rescue of the animal. Thus, lmountaineers climbed the highest volcano in Mexico and, with the support of a backpack, they lowered the dog.
