A Lifelong Commitment to Giving
In the small community of Vitteaux, France, two men stand out for their remarkable dedication to blood donation: Jean-Louis Clerc and Nicolas Jacques. Their stories highlight the profound impact individuals can have on their communities through consistent acts of generosity. Blood donation remains a critical need worldwide, with shortages frequently impacting healthcare systems. According to the world Health association, regular blood donations are essential to ensure a safe and sufficient blood supply.
jean-louis Clerc, a 54-year-old farmer, began his journey as a blood donor during his military service in Germany in 1990. Inspired by his mother, Josyan, a dedicated donor herself, Jean-Louis continued to participate in collections organized by the volunteer blood donors of Vitteaux. His motivation is simple yet powerful: a desire to be useful and save lives.He donates blood twice a year, viewing it as an chance to connect with friends and engage in meaningful conversations.
I feel like I am useful, to save lives and I come twice a year… This is an opportunity to meet friends and simply discuss life.
Chasing a Milestone: 150 Donations
Jean-Louis has set an aspiring goal for himself: to reach 150 donations before reaching the age limit of 70. this requires him to donate at least three times a year, a challenge given the demands of his farming profession. To overcome this obstacle, he plans to participate in collections organized by neighboring communities. His unwavering commitment underscores the importance of regular blood donation and its potential to save countless lives.
From Skeptic to Advocate: Nicolas’s Conversion
Nicolas Jacques,originally from Mâcon,moved to Vitteaux in 2000. His life took an unexpected turn in 2022 when he met Gaby Charlut, a dedicated volunteer with the local blood donor association. Initially hesitant due to a fear of needles, Nicolas was convinced by Gaby to participate in his first collection. He quickly discovered that the process was not as daunting as he had imagined.
As then, Nicolas has become a passionate advocate for blood donation, driven by the belief that each donation can save lives. In 2014, he took on the role of treasurer for the association, contributing to the organization of collections and ensuring donors are well-cared for. His enthusiasm has inspired his partner,Emmanuelle,and seven of his colleagues from the Departmental Council Road Center to join him in this act of solidarity.
Teamwork and Recognition
Both Jean-Louis and Nicolas have been recognized for their extraordinary contributions, receiving the Level 5 diploma from donors after reaching 100 donations. While they appreciate the recognition, they remain humble, viewing their actions as a simple act of civic duty. Their story exemplifies the power of community involvement and the profound impact individuals can have when they come together to support a common cause.
