Deon Fourie Criticizes Opponents’ Actions During Line-Outs

In an interview post-rugby match, Stormers captain Deon Fourie highlighted an ‘unsportsmanlike’ moment that occurred during their 12-36 defeat to Leinster in the United Rugby Championship Round 10.

The contentious incident took place before a Stormers line-out throw when Joseph Dweba, the Stormers’ hooker, struggled to hear the call from his side.

Fourie reported this issue to referee Eoghan Cross but found no resolution. After the game, Fourie expressed his frustration with the situation.

“I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this… but there’s a certain line where sportsmanship comes into play,” Fourie explained.

He avoided naming specific individuals involved but criticized players who shouted and ran numbers during their line-out calls.

“It made it difficult for us to hear instructions or react to our calls,” Fourie said.

“I approached the referee several times to stop it, but unfortunately, it didn’t work. For me, this behavior is unsportsmanlike and detrimental to the game.

“Otherwise, rugby might turn into a shouting game in the future,” Fourie concluded.

Manie Libbok Leaves with a Knee Injury

Another significant concern for the Stormers arose when flyhalf Manie Libbok exited the game in the 38th minute, looking visibly uncomfortable.

Director of Rugby John Dobson provided an update on Libbok’s condition following the match.

“Literally zero details, but it’s a knee injury. He can’t run, but beyond that, I have no information,” Dobson admitted.

Libbok’s injury will likely add pressure on the Stormers to find a substitute who can effectively manage the flyhalf position.

Reflecting on the Leinster Match

The loss to Leinster was another setback for the Stormers, who find themselves struggling for consistency this season.

Despite the defeat, the team’s captain used the opportunity to speak out about preserving sportsmanship in rugby.

“Maintaining fairness and respect is crucial for the longevity and appeal of any sport,” Fourie emphasized.

“We as players have a responsibility to uphold these values on the field, and I hope that other teams will respect us and the game.”
