The “STERN Scholarship”, which STERN announces annually as part of its “Young Photography” funding program, will be awarded for the tenth time in 2021. Since the start of the program in 2013, nine photojournalists have each had a year of practical experience in the STERN editorial team.

Interested parties under the age of 35 can apply for the next scholarship from February 1st to February 14th. The prerequisite for this is a degree in the visual field. The period of the scholarship is from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022. It includes an annual contract with STERN with monthly remuneration of 2,800 euros gross. During this time, the candidate is a permanent member of the Hamburg editorial team, is directly involved in the development of topics and stories and receives insights into the editorial work, in the various departments and can publish their own work. The main focus of the work at STERN is the journalistic and photographic examination of current affairs – in Germany as well as abroad. The focus is on modern portrait and reportage photography.

In 2020 the one-year “STERN grant” was awarded to Max Arens. He is a graduate of the University of Applied Sciences Europe in Hamburg in the photography department. As a STERN scholarship holder, he documented everyday life on the largest cocoa plantation in Nicaragua.

STERN picture editor Andreas Trampe: “We are proud to be able to award the scholarship for the tenth time this year. We have made it easier for many young photojournalists to start their careers and supported them in developing their careers. Many have remained loyal to STERN over the years. With their wealth of ideas and commitment, the young talents are always a visual enrichment for STERN. “
