The Xbox app on PC is expanding its functionality to include games from other storefronts, creating a centralized hub for PC gamers. This move mirrors efforts by companies like CD Projekt with GOG Galaxy, aiming to simplify game access across different platforms.

Microsoft’s declaration highlights the integration of games from Battle.net, the Blizzard store. Support for Steam is also expected, with Microsoft having previously mentioned Steam as a platform whose games can be launched from the Xbox interface when discussing its Ally handheld devices.

According to Microsoft, games installed through their respective platforms will automatically appear in the Xbox app. This feature was initially rolled out to Xbox Insiders before becoming available to the broader user base.

Starting Games, Not Installing Them

“games inevitably have to be managed on the platform on which they were bought”

The integration focuses on launching games, not managing installations. Games must still be installed adn updated via their original platforms, such as Steam. This means that even on devices like the Xbox Ally, users will still need Steam to install games before launching them through the Xbox app.

This strategy aligns with Microsoft’s vision of the Xbox brand as a central point for cross-platform gaming, blurring the lines between PC and Xbox consoles. This has led to speculation about Steam potentially running on future Xbox consoles, even though this remains unconfirmed.
