The Liga champions of Barcelona failed to sign the star of Boca Juniors Almendra, attracting the attention of the Premier League spurs.
Few players are more revered in South America than Juan Roman Riquelme.
It has never been the most difficult job, nor the most suitable or the most disciplined, but Riquelme was what football is on a continent that loves the game like no other. The Argentine legend was a man who played for the sake of it, a wonderfully gifted and mercurial director who transcended tactics and gameplan.
So it is no wonder that the so-called "new Riquelme" has suitors from all over the world. According to AS, Tottenham Hotspur is willing to unleash the £ 23 million release clause in the contract of Boca Juniors star Augustin Almendra although it will face competition from Manchester City, rival of Juventus, Valencia, Napoli, Porto and Premier League.
But whoever wins the race for one of the most coveted talents in Argentina, this ongoing transfer saga looks set to end in Barcelona, with their heads disappointed.
AS states that the Liga champions were the first to inquire about Almendra after a friendly fight against Boca in August 2018. Barca failed to finish the deal, however, and only managed to bring it to the Attention of some of the largest clubs in Europe.
Boca will be powerless to prevent Almendra from leaving if Tottenham triggers his release clause and the possibility of working under compatriot Mauricio Pochettino, who transformed Harry, Kele, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen into world-renowned talents, will surely do appeal.
Whatever happens, Barcelona could be left to regret their opportunity.
