Roybal appointed assistant athletic director Gina Capobianco to be the boys’ interim basketball coach after Danny O’Fallon’s death last week from cancer.
Capobianco is a former girls basketball coach. She will become one of the first women to train a child’s basketball team in the history of the City Section.
Athletic director Oscar Letona said the players met for the first time on Monday since they learned of O’Fallon’s death during the winter break. Crisis counselors were made available.
The team will resume its season on Wednesday.
O’Fallon services will be held Sunday at the Japanese Community Center in Venice at 5 p.m.
O’Fallon was diagnosed with stage 4 intestinal cancer in November 2018, but continued training while receiving treatment. Last winter he led Roybal to the Division title of Section III of the City.
