This weekend, the UFC returns to action for the first time in 2020, and brings with it a great fight. The biggest sports star, Conor McGregor, will return to UFC on Saturday when he faces Donald Cerrone in the main event of UFC 246. Given McGregor’s story as a massive draw, the event seems to be one of the biggest in 2020 for the UFC.
But will be?
McGregor has not competed in 15 months, but spent 2019 avoiding a series of legal problems such as reports of sexual assault. His last outing was his disastrous fight with lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, where the former two-division champion was dominated and then presented. Prior to that fight, McGregor had a fruitless foray into boxing when he fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. in “The Money Fight” in August 2017, losing by technical knockout in the tenth round. McGregor’s last victory came at UFC 205 in 2016, his slight victory in the title over Eddie Alvarez. In short, it’s been a long time since McGregor was doing the kind of things that made fans fall in love with him and, upon entering UFC 246, some experts began asking the question “Is McGregor’s star power fading away? ? “
UFC President Dana White certainly doesn’t think so.
Speaking recently with McGregor’s own media entity, The Mac Life, White said that right now UFC 246 will be as big an event as you would expect from Conor McGregor.
“When you talk about people who say they have” knowledge “of the business and say these things, everyone is full of shit,” White said. “None of them knows what they are talking about and literally none of them knows anything about this business. None of them. None of them know anything about this business. We knew what the Conor fight would do and obviously we are the ones who set the price of the tickets and all the things that go with the business. Conor comes here and is pulling a $ 10.6 million door. The fight is off the charts. As for ESPN, and what is happening there with PPV and everything else, everything is as always. “
Dana White is not the only one who thinks McGregor is still a big business for the UFC. Earlier this week, McGregor estimated that he would earn approximately $ 80 million for his fight with Cerrone at UFC 246. It was a surprising revelation and one that far exceeds estimates of what McGregor has been doing. But if you listen to Dana, it may not be as extravagant as it seems. When asked about McGregor’s statement, White did not contradict McGregor.
“Listen, Conor is a massive superstar in this sport and it’s a phenomenon,” White said. “The boy has been earning a lot of money since the day he entered. From the first day, when he fought, he started going like this [moves hand sharply up]. Nothing has changed.”
McGregor certainly still seems to capture the attention of the public. Tickets for UFC 246 were sold out within a few minutes of going on sale and traffic numbers for McGregor’s return through the platforms have been high. But for McGregor and White the question may not be whether McGregor is still a great draw, but can it be a record tie again? McGregor’s fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov broke the previous UFC PPV record (also held by McGregor) and Dana White has made it clear that UFC would like to reserve that rematch if McGregor wins on Saturday. But first you have to go through Cerrone.
“Obviously, he needs a victory on Saturday,” White said. “It’s a big problem for him to come back here and win this fight.” What has haunted him is the rematch with Khabib, so Saturday is a big step in that direction. ”

I see that Twitter showed disappointment with the respect shown between Cerrone and McGregor. Everyone expects a fun show and they are disappointed.
It’s a nice and new change from The Notorious # UFC246
