Derby boss Frank Lampard wants to make Gary Cahill his first major signing of the summer.
The boss of the Rams is about to head for his former teammate from Chelsea as The Rams make the promotion to the Premier League successful.
The deal for the 33-year-old will run on Derby beats Aston Villa in the Monday play-off final of Monday in Wembley.
Former Chelsea skipper Cahill is a free agent at Stamford Bridge after seven years and Lampard hopes the club will be able to fund a deal if they go up.
If they fall on the last hurdle, the kind of wages Cahill would be looking forward to would almost certainly kill their interest.
The former defender of England knows that he has to considerably reduce his salary of £ 75,000 per week to Chelsea, but is in a strong negotiating position given that he is available in a free manner, giving the clubs the space to make a deal Close.
Cahill enjoyed a glittering career at The Bridge, winner of the two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League.
But his last season was disappointing with only eight appearances under Maurizio Sarri.
Cahill believes there is still a lot in the tank and has said publicly that he will have another player in mind for another three or four years.
But he failed to defeat Sarri and eventually lost respect for the Italian after he had received no explanation that he was out of the team.
Derby knows they have to move quickly with West Ham, Southampton and Sheffield United, who are known to be interested.
