Borussia Dortmund has signed Mateu Morey of FC Barcelona. The BVB confirmed this on Monday. At Borussia, the 19-year-old right back signed a working document until 2024.
sport.de takes the Spaniard under the microscope. What role would Morey play in BVB? What are his strengths and where are his weaknesses? And why did Dortmund make the race for the coveted defender FC Bayern was once interested in?
Who is the BVB new signing of Mateu Morey?
Mateu Jaume Morey Bauzá, born in 2000, grew up on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca. The local club RCD Mallorca recognizes his talent early and integrates him into the youth team.
A little later his skills spread on the mainland. As a C-Junior, Mateu Morey joins FC Barcelona's famous junior academy, where the younger is trained on the right wing.
In September 2016, Mateu Morey made his debut as right back for the Spanish national team under 17. Shortly thereafter, he moved to the final with the country selection at the World Cup, but failed there to England. The revenge follows a year later at the European championship, because Spain prevails over penalties. The interim compensation for Spain also scored the Barca jewel, with left, mind you. Also from the moment that Mateu Morey is still cool and transformed.
After three years in the U19 of the Catalans, with whom he wins the Youth League in the spring of 2018 and moments later the Spanish Junior Championship, the then 18-year-old goes to the FC Barcelona reserve team. But that is where the first setbacks in the so steep youth career follow.
At the start of last season, a meniscal tear stops him. Just like he wants to attack again after more than seven months in March, a torn ligament in his knee. The season went to Mateu Morey, who lost the year almost without a minute of play.
Why did BVB come to Morey?
For two reasons: on the one hand, the 19-year-old contract expired on 30 June in FC Barcelona, so Dortmund signs Mateu Morey without a transfer fee. Only a training allowance, which is reported to be 90,000 euros, is owed.
Although according to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo", Barca last January still tried to convince the self-growth of an extension. However, the young person would have been in conversation with Borussia at that time, probably from October 2018. The BVB therefore recognized and seized his opportunity early on.
In addition to the favorable contractual situation, on the other hand, Dortmund would need a right-back in the medium term. After the 2019/20 seasonal loan, Achraf Hakimi returns to Real Madrid, the contract of 34-year-old Lukasz Piszczek is unlikely to be extended.
"We see this transfer in perspective and look forward to Mateu's development in the professional field," said sports director Michael Zorc.
Mateu Morey did not bring this perspective to BVB in the least. None of the other best European clubs that are interested, such as Juventus or Manchester City, have such high betting minutes in their reach. Even Bayern, who should have been interested in 2017, has the shortest end.
What are Mateu Morey's strengths?
Mateu Morey is a right back, who also feels at home on the right wing. In that sense he shows some resemblance to Achraf Hakimi, with his defensive powers prevailing.
"A physical miracle, he never stops running: he delivers his teammate templates at the front, he stops his opponent with skills at the back", for example, the FC Barcelona describes the way to play the talent on the homepage.
Michael Zorc also illustrates the qualities of the young person during the presentation: "Mateu Morey is a great defending talent of the FC Barcelona football school, which has expressed technical quality."
Where are the risks for BVB?
In short, the deal for the runner-up poses no risks, the financial conditions are very manageable. Mateu Morey will train with the professionals under Lucien Favre and slowly come to the first team. He is expected to play mainly in the reserve team in the first year.
"I want to integrate quickly, support the team and above all learn the language," says the newcomer himself: "The latter will make everything easier."
However, there are still doubts: on the one hand, it is uncertain whether Morey will be able to cope physically and mentally with the last year lost due to the injuries. On the other hand, it is important to see if the 1.72-meter defender meets the requirements of the Champions League.
The last player, who switched from Barca Academy La Masia to BVB with a similar point of view at an early stage, was no longer able to prove himself to the professionals after a year and a half: Sergio Gómez. Incidentally, Mateu Morey won the U17 European Championship with the attacking player in 2017 …
