Angels acquire pitcher Matt Andries of Diamondbacks

The Angels increased their pitch depth on Tuesday by acquiring veteran right-hander Matt Andriese of the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor league pitcher Jeremy Beasley.

Andriese, 30, left the bullpen for most of the last two seasons in Tampa Bay and Arizona, but Angels general manager Billy Eppler said Andriese will compete for a rotation position this spring.

Andriese, 6 feet 2 inches and 225 pounds, appeared in 54 games, all in relief, for the Diamondbacks last season, with a 5-5 mark with a 4.71 ERA, striking out 79 and walking 27 in 70 innings and two thirds , a race – the best proportion of 10.1 strikeouts for nine innings.

Andriese avoided arbitration by signing for $ 1,395 million last week, and because he still has minor league options, he can be transported between the big leagues and triple A as often as the organization needs.

“It has a history of startup and has demonstrated the ability to handle a greater workload and launch volume,” said Eppler. “We can always make the transition back to the bullpen if necessary.”

Andriese, a product of Redlands East Valley High and UC Riverside, spent most of his first three major league seasons as a starter in Tampa Bay before moving to the bullpen in 2018.

It was changed from Tampa Bay to Arizona in July 2018 and has compiled a record of 24-30 and 4.58 of effectiveness in 167 games, 49 of them in five seasons.

Andriese mixes a fastball that averaged 92.5 mph last season with a curve and a change and has proven capable of inducing weak contact.

Beasley, 24, was 30 years of the AngelsthClemson’s full selection in 2015. Right advanced to triple A last season, making his last three starts for Salt Lake. He spent most of the year in double A mobile, 6-7 with a 4.06 ERA in 23 games, striking out 102 and walking 42 in 108 innings and two thirds.

To make room for the list of 40 men for Andriese, right-handed pitcher Luis Madero was designated for the assignment. In addition, left-hander Adalberto Mejía erased the exemptions and was released.
