After winning the title in 2013, everyone knew that Manchester United needed an addition or two in midfield. The likes of Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick have left a big hole in their central midfield. In 2014 Manchester United signed a Spanish midfielder Atletic Bilbao and five years later became a favorite of the fans.
Ander Herrera left his mark at Old Trafford when he faced United in 2012. Sir Alex Ferguson also admitted he wanted to buy it. However, it was Louis van Gaal who ended up taking him to Manchester. His dedication to playing for the Red Devils was evident from the start. He paid his buy-out clause to join United. While it's a fan favorite it's awesome, Herrera has it all in creating a club legend.
Act as a leader
After seeing their team beat Chelsea in the FA Cup, fans have spotted and worshiped what Herrera did after the game. Embracing and talking a lot about Sanchez, he showed how Herrera can or should be the captain of United. His post match interview transmits his clear passion and loyalty to the club.
While encouraging others, he is also a stickler for his personal performance. No one can question Herrera's tactical discipline. In 2017, he refused to grant Eden Hazard any free space, a men's marking job that was not one-off since he was able to replicate his performance last Monday. The Spaniard has repeatedly demonstrated to Manchester United that he can be a key player when he is called and can follow the manager's orders until the last detail.
Dominating the midfield
In addition to the following instructions, Herrera is also very versatile. The big reason why he can track someone down for 90 minutes is that he is not a stranger to different positions. Having the ability to play as a defensive and attacking midfielder means that he can take on different roles during a game.
Legends like Roy Keane and Paul Scholes were idolized for their ability to take the games by the scruff. Ander Herrera is slowly starting to play this role. While Paul Pogba gains the applause for leading United's attacks, it is Herrera who gelates the defense and the team's attack. It also does the back-up to help Nemanja Matic and the defense. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's midfield trio is critical to his initial success, but without Herrera, there's no one who can meld the midfield and attack. He showed it when United drew 2-2 against Burnley, a game where Herrera remained on the bench.
At the age of 29, Ander Herrera could and should have ended his career at Manchester United. Taking into account all his positive qualities both on and off the field, he will no doubt be remembered as a united legend and loyal servant of the club.
