The number 20 player in the 20-year world rankings withdrew from Adelaide International on Monday after he aggravated the injury while playing five games on an intense ATP Cup calendar.

He underwent a daily treatment in an attempt to play at the Grand Slam opening season next week, but confirmed Thursday that he would not be able to participate.

The compatriot Nick Kyrgios, who in the 26th place will now be Australia’s best ranked hope in the men’s draw, said the news of De Minaur’s withdrawal was “heartbreaking.”
