MANILA – During the Integrated Bar of the Philippines’ (IBP) 20th National Convention of Lawyers, Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez delivered a powerful keynote address in Lahug, Cebu City. His message emphasized the critical role lawyers play in maintaining constitutional integrity, defending justice, and advocating for the disenfranchised.
Defending the Constitution and Justice
“We must ensure that every Filipino, regardless of social status or education, understands that the law serves as a protector of the weak, not an instrument of power,” Romualdez said. He highlighted the importance of justice as a fundamental right, not a privilege.
The Courage of a Lawyer
Romualdez insisted that the legal profession demands more than just legal expertise; it requires moral courage. “We need the courage to uphold the Constitution when it is inconvenient, to speak truth when silence seems safer, and to advocate for justice for everyone, especially those unable to afford legal representation,” he emphasized.

The Speaker underscored the significant responsibility lawyers carry. “The law is the cornerstone of our nation, shaping the lives of millions and serving as a moral and legal compass. Lawyers must be its stewards,” Romualdez said.

Romualdez addressed the challenges faced by the legal profession in an era of rapid technological advancements and global shifts. “Technology is revolutionizing commerce, AI is changing legal practices, and geopolitical landscapes are evolving. Yet, here at home, democracy is tested by apathy, not force. Law must not be misused; it must be guided with moral clarity,” he noted.

The House of Representatives, under Romualdez’s leadership, remains committed to partnering with the legal community. “We need your guidance to ensure the system meets the needs of the Filipino people. Let us build a legal profession and nation where justice is felt, not just done,” he said.

Concluding his address, Romualdez called on fellow lawyers to uphold their core principles. “Remember that at their core, you are defenders of the law and stewards of justice. Let this be our commitment, our cause, and our enduring legacy,” he emphasized.
